Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the OpenTelemetry Python SDK and instrumentation libraries in collaboration with open-source maintainers and vendors.
- Build Python instrumentation for AI agents, model calls, tool execution, asynchronous code, and generative AI observability conventions.
- Improve SDK performance using profiling and benchmarks while balancing runtime overhead, compatibility, and maintainability.
- Own projects from ambiguous problem definition through design, implementation, testing, documentation, and release.
- Set technical direction, mentor engineers, promote OpenTelemetry best practices, and represent Grafana Labs in the OpenTelemetry community.
- Partner with go-to-market, Product, Support, and customers to investigate instrumentation issues and turn findings into fixes and guidance.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience.
- Strong Python proficiency, including debugging production software, language internals, libraries, and asynchronous code.
- Interest in AI applications and agent systems; prior experience building AI systems is helpful but not required.
- Experience working in open-source communities and willingness to collaborate with OpenTelemetry maintainers and users.
- Familiarity with Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry, plus experience with cloud-based software or systems engineering and production environments.
- Experience with open-source observability projects, Python instrumentation, profiling, runtime diagnostics, asynchronous context propagation, technical leadership, AI framework or agent instrumentation, or OpenTelemetry generative AI conventions is preferred.
- Rust experience is a plus for exploring Rust-backed Python SDK performance improvements.
