Base Salary
$177k - $365k/yr
Responsibilities
- Define backend and platform architecture for AI-driven product experiences, including visual chat, AI image generation and editing, and agentic or LLM-based products.
- Architect scalable end-to-end systems covering API layers, orchestration, logging, evaluation, storage, and safety controls.
- Design and implement production backend systems, including API endpoints, orchestration layers, data models, caching strategies, and integrations with Pinterest’s LLM infrastructure.
- Lead resolution of complex technical challenges involving LLM inference scaling, latency and quality tradeoffs, and reusable backend capabilities.
- Create shared tooling and evaluation frameworks with offline evaluation pipelines, A/B testing hooks, quality metrics, and observability.
- Set technical direction for complex cross-team projects, review critical design documents, and align engineering, product, ML, and UX partners.
- Improve monitoring, alerting, incident response, capacity planning, and service health while mentoring engineers and developing technical leaders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 6 years of backend software engineering experience with a record of leading and shipping projects with substantial team-level or organization-level impact.
- Experience serving as a technical leader for large, ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives spanning one or more teams.
- Strong Python development skills and the ability to navigate and improve large codebases.
- Experience designing, building, and operating distributed services at scale, including judgment around caching, asynchronous processing, data storage, databases, indexing, and queueing solutions.
- Experience building LLM-powered or ML-backed products in production, including model integration, prompting and orchestration, evaluation, latency and cost tradeoffs, and operational challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to use AI to improve engineering speed and quality while validating the accuracy and quality of AI-assisted work.
- High integrity and ownership, including protecting sensitive data, avoiding over-reliance on AI, and remaining accountable for decisions and deliverables.
