- Sign off on materially complex AI systems and identify architectural, safety, and reliability risks before production.
- Own shared foundations including retrieval patterns, evaluation infrastructure, data pipelines, and engineering tooling.
- Build the hardest technical components and act as the escalation point for difficult GenAI problems.
- Design production systems with graceful degradation, fallback behavior, affordability, and suitable cost and latency.
- Develop senior engineers through coaching, feedback, delegation, and increasingly challenging technical ownership.
- Shape hiring and engineering reviews by defining clear standards for quality.
- Provide actionable industry insight and explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- Experience setting technical direction that engineering teams adopted, including the ability to discuss both successes and failures.
- Strong Python skills and practical SQL experience for grounding data, golden datasets, and failure analysis.
- Deep current expertise in retrieval at scale, vector stores, agentic orchestration, multimodal systems, evaluation infrastructure, and appropriate fine-tuning.
- Experience with MLOps tooling, deployment, and cloud infrastructure on AWS and GCP.
- Experience designing and operating production systems, including responsibility when systems failed.
- A strong perspective on evaluation and distinguishing regression-detecting evaluations from evaluations that merely provide reassurance.
- Direct contributions that establish a high quality bar for other engineers.
- Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Self-awareness about knowledge gaps and willingness to involve relevant expertise early.
- Experience improving other engineers through talks, reviews, coaching, or day-to-day collaboration.
