Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable backend services for the Box Automate workflow engine using Java.
  • Build and optimize algorithms for workflow graph representation, traversal, and execution.
  • Develop and extend the Automate meta-language for complex, variable-driven workflows.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and infrastructure teams to define requirements and deliver features.
  • Participate in code reviews, architectural decisions, engineering best practices, and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to and triage production issues.
  • Attend regular stand-ups, team meetings, and manager one-on-ones.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software development experience with demonstrated backend development expertise.
  • Proficiency in Java and strong knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithm design.
  • Strong computer science foundations and comfort with graph algorithms, optimization problems, and complex computational concepts.
  • Experience building scalable backend systems, including database design, caching strategies, and asynchronous processing.
  • Ability to assess, communicate, and complete project milestones with managers and team members in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Fluency in written and verbal English.
  • Preferred: experience with workflow engines, business process management platforms, or integration frameworks such as Camunda or Flowable.
  • Preferred: familiarity with automated testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
  • Preferred: experience leading cross-functional projects or mentoring junior engineers.
  • Preferred: experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Preferred: open-source contributions or demonstrated passion for software craftsmanship.
