Base Salary
$179k - $225k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead architecture and development of scalable data pipelines and backend microservices using Java, Apache Spark, Scala, and Spring Boot.
- Build systems that ingest, process, and serve billions of customer data points with low latency, high availability, and strong data consistency.
- Integrate AI coding assistants and autonomous agents into development, testing, refactoring, and engineering workflows.
- Design backend architectures and APIs that interface with AI/ML models and LLM endpoints for data enrichment and pipeline monitoring.
- Lead, mentor, and inspire backend and data engineers while establishing best practices and conducting code reviews.
- Build cost-effective AWS cloud architectures and optimize SQL, NoSQL, and Spark workloads.
- Implement monitoring, alerting, automated pipelines, data-quality controls, pipeline-integrity measures, and zero-downtime deployments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience; internship experience does not apply.
- At least 1 year of cloud computing experience with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Preferred: master’s degree and 7+ years of professional engineering experience using Java, Scala, Python, or Go.
- Preferred: 4+ years with advanced SQL and NoSQL database systems, 3+ years of hands-on cloud experience, and 3+ years with open source frameworks.
- Preferred: 2+ years of Apache Spark performance tuning involving memory configuration, data partitioning, and DAG optimization.
- Proficiency with AI-native development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or OpenAI Canvas.

- Annual salary ranges vary by location: $197,300–$225,100 in McLean, VA and $179,400–$204,700 in Richmond, VA.
