Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Kafka Connect services and streaming pipeline components, including kafka-forwarder and changelogs-processor.
- Extend the bronze streaming layer across Depop’s growing table catalogue from scoped tickets through production rollout.
- Implement data contracts, freshness checks, quarantine, and alerting for streaming datasets.
- Participate in the support rota, onboard new events, and troubleshoot streaming issues for other teams.
- Write documentation, contribute to design discussions, and develop judgement around latency, completeness, cost, and freshness trade-offs.
- Pair with senior engineers on complex streaming framework work and progress toward owning larger components.
Requirements
- Experience building and operating production data pipelines, ideally with Kafka or another streaming/event-driven system.
- Working knowledge of at least one of Scala, Kotlin, or Python, with willingness to work across all three.
- Familiarity with data warehousing concepts such as bronze, silver, and gold layers, plus interest in data quality and freshness monitoring.
- Comfort with Kafka Connect, schema registries, and distributed systems concepts, or willingness to develop that experience quickly.
- Collaborative working style and ability to partner with Data Infrastructure, ML, Insights, and senior engineers.
