- Build scalable Python and AWS event-driven backend services using EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Lambda, and ECS.
- Implement reliable exactly-once message delivery with idempotency, deduplication, retries, backoff, dead-letter handling, replay, and message status tracking.
- Implement consent, channel and category preferences, unsubscribe and STOP propagation, quiet hours, and transactional-versus-marketing message separation.
- Build least-privilege tooling for reviewed one-off and bulk sends with audience previews, test sends, rate limits, and kill switches.
- Design and ship OpenAPI-first, versioned, backward-compatible patient APIs for web and mobile clients and help migrate consumers from legacy GraphQL.
- Improve reliability, observability, and incident response using Datadog.
- Write automated tests, improve engineering quality, lead design discussions, review implementations, mentor engineers, and influence architecture.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Lifecycle Marketing, Clinical, and engineering teams while using AI coding tools thoughtfully.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend engineering experience owning production services, ideally with Python or a similar language such as Ruby, Go, or Node.js.
- Strong experience designing and building REST APIs with contract design, versioning, and error handling in a modern backend framework.
- Hands-on AWS experience, including event-driven systems and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience with distributed systems, external APIs and webhooks, idempotency, retries, rate limits, and partial failure handling.
- Deep relational database knowledge, particularly PostgreSQL, plus experience with NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB and caching systems such as Redis.
- Experience implementing authentication and authorization with OAuth2, JWT, and service-to-service security.
- Experience writing comprehensive backend tests and maintaining strong test coverage, such as with Pytest.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog or similar platforms.
- Ability to independently lead complex initiatives, make technical decisions, manage on-call and incident response, and balance delivery with maintainability.
- Ability to decompose complex projects, work through ambiguity, communicate effectively, and collaborate across engineering and business teams.
- Preferred experience includes Iterable or similar customer engagement platforms, including Braze, Customer.io, Klaviyo, and Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
- Preferred experience includes large-scale SMS with Twilio or similar providers, 10DLC, short codes, opt-in and STOP handling, and carrier compliance.
- Preferred experience includes push notifications with APNs and FCM, device token lifecycle management, and mobile deep linking.
- Preferred experience includes email delivery, AWS SES, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, bounce and complaint handling, and suppression lists.
- Preferred experience includes multi-channel notification orchestration, preference centers, frequency capping, scheduled messaging, GraphQL, Backend-for-Frontend patterns, and collaboration with iOS and Android teams.
- Familiarity with FHIR, Terraform, Docker, GitHub Actions, and highly regulated industries involving sensitive health data is preferred.
