Responsibilities
- Own the Java backend service used by Canva’s AI editing features and GPU model workers.
- Design APIs, protocol contracts, job and task state machines, multi-step pipelines, queue-driven worker orchestration, persistence, moderation, and error handling.
- Ship new AI editing capabilities end to end, including API design, asynchronous GPU handoff, feature-flagged rollout, and metrics.
- Operate production services through on-call support, autoscaling, capacity planning, health probes, regional rollouts, release schedules, and deployment testing.
- Optimize request latency and cost across queueing, media processing, GPU execution, moderation, and S3 uploads.
- Build platform capabilities for internal services and product surfaces with backward-compatible contracts, provenance, privacy, and data-eligibility controls.
- Act as the backend technical lead, shape architecture and design reviews, and raise backend engineering standards.
- Partner with product, research, ML, inference, and consumer teams to deliver AI media capabilities.
Requirements
- Significant commercial experience designing, building, and operating production backend systems, including on-call ownership.
- High proficiency in Java or a similar JVM language such as Kotlin or Scala.
- Strong computer science fundamentals in concurrency, distributed systems, performance engineering, and scalable service design.
- Experience building asynchronous job-based systems with queues, workers, state machines, retries, timeouts, and partial-failure handling.
- Willingness to own operational concerns including metrics, dashboards, autoscaling, capacity, deployment configuration, and progressive rollouts.
- Strong API design skills and experience evolving contracts without breaking downstream callers.
- Ability to work with ML engineers and researchers and write some Python for worker entry points, job handlers, or deployment configuration.
- Track record of leading technical initiatives end to end and driving architecture decisions.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for explaining technical trade-offs to product, ML, and infrastructure audiences.
- PyTorch, model architecture, and model training experience are not required.
