Base Salary

$100k - $140k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop software for operating and scaling a distributed network of AI-enabled edge computing nodes.
  • Build custom tooling and infrastructure for a fleet growing from 150 to 500 devices.
  • Ensure reliable operation of distributed devices, cloud infrastructure, and data pipelines.
  • Set technical direction and develop software deployment technologies across systems at scale.
  • Mentor students and junior engineers and lead a small team of 1–2 junior engineers.
  • Support monitoring, infrastructure, and cybersecurity planning with the distributed team.
  • Partner with research users, collaborators, and external organizations to meet node and data requirements.
  • Set up and manage support ticket systems for platform and device issues.
  • Maintain code and system documentation, perform maintenance, and manage certificate renewals.
  • Routinely travel between Argonne National Laboratory, University of Illinois Chicago, and Northwestern University work sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Five years of direct experience supporting code, services, and deployments in production.
  • Fluency in Linux, including scripting, user management, networking, package management, SSH, and debugging.
  • Fluency in software engineering.
  • Authorized to work in the United States by the employment start date.
  • Valid driver's license by the employment start date.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Ability to lead or mentor engineers is preferred.
  • Experience with Kubernetes cluster deployment and administration is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, cloud data stores, cybersecurity practices, embedded Linux devices, AI software stacks, Ansible, Python data analysis and visualization, and GitHub Actions is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn new tools and technologies are preferred.
