Responsibilities
- Own device controllers end to end, including API design, implementation, rollout, and ongoing operational health.
- Build robust services that handle failures in real-world instruments and external dependencies.
- Integrate devices with the current framework and roll changes out across the fleet without disrupting experiments.
- Improve shared controller frameworks when solutions apply across multiple devices.
- Strengthen observability, health checking, and alerting in collaboration with systems teams and scientists.
- Review code and help less experienced engineers improve while remaining hands-on.
Requirements
- Experience working with Linux-based systems and interfacing with hardware.
- Strong systems engineering skills, with solid Rust experience or deep proficiency in another systems language and willingness to work in Rust, including asynchronous programming.
- Experience designing and operating networked services such as gRPC or REST, including error handling, observability, and failure modes.
- Experience with hardware and instrument protocols or interfaces such as SCPI, Modbus, serial, and Ethernet.
- Experience owning the production behavior and reliability of software, not only its correctness in testing.
- Strong communication skills across software and interdisciplinary teams.
- Interest in mentoring and helping other engineers improve while continuing to build software.
