Base Salary
$190k - $230k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and launch backend services and product capabilities incorporating LLMs, machine learning models, and other AI systems.
- Build production workflows for model inference, structured outputs, tool use, retrieval, agentic workflows, and other LLM application patterns.
- Partner with Data Scientists and related teams to productionize models and experimental approaches.
- Develop evaluation, observability, feedback, and monitoring mechanisms for AI systems in production.
- Design reliable backend architectures that handle probabilistic and non-deterministic model behavior at scale.
- Work with structured and unstructured clinical and operational data, including documents and images.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, data science, and clinical teams to iterate on product ideas.
- Apply secure coding and data-handling practices to protect patient privacy and security.
- Research and advocate for improved applied AI techniques, architectures, and development practices.
- Support SmarterDx applications and AI systems in production.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software development experience, including significant backend and cloud-based systems experience.
- Expertise in Python and/or TypeScript with strong software engineering fundamentals.
- Production experience building LLM-powered applications and integrating models into larger software systems.
- Experience collaborating with Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, or research-oriented teams.
- Experience designing APIs, services, data models, and asynchronous or event-driven workflows.
- Experience with Postgres or a similar relational database and cloud-native distributed systems.
- Familiarity with evaluating, debugging, and monitoring AI systems in production.
- Strong judgment regarding reliability, testing, observability, and failure handling for systems with probabilistic outputs.
- Experience working in a security-conscious environment and strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred experience includes traditional machine learning and generative AI applications, LangChain or LangGraph, Langfuse or Braintrust, retrieval-augmented generation, tool-calling, agentic workflows, computer vision, multimodal models, document understanding, OCR pipelines, evaluation datasets, human-in-the-loop workflows, Kubernetes, HL7/FHIR, Snowflake, Datadog, and health tech.
