Responsibilities
- Lead large, multi-quarter initiatives involving multiple engineering teams from scoping through production.
- Write exemplar code on critical paths and set implementation standards for the wider engineering organization.
- Review designs and guide trade-offs among quality, speed, reliability, and maintainability.
- Define operational standards covering monitoring, availability, scalability, security, release safety, and cost awareness.
- Help lead serious incidents and ensure appropriate follow-up fixes are completed.
- Lead tool evaluations and architecture migrations, making build-versus-buy decisions explicit.
- Use AI coding tools effectively while challenging unnecessary AI-generated complexity.
- Own business outcomes by defining success metrics, monitoring launches, and challenging work that will not benefit merchants.
- Mentor Senior Engineers and below and lead or participate in senior-level interviews.
- Create and improve architecture documentation, decision records, runbooks, and other engineering documentation.
Requirements
- Typically 8+ years of experience building and shipping production software, including complex cross-team initiatives.
- Deep expertise in TypeScript, JavaScript, and Node.js, including REST and/or GraphQL APIs and distributed systems.
- Strong relational database, data modeling, and SQL skills, with familiarity with NoSQL databases.
- Experience designing reliable, scalable cloud systems with CI/CD, observability, and incident-response practices.
- Hands-on experience with LLMs or agentic systems, or a demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies effectively.
- Daily use of AI coding tools and sound judgment about when to trust them.
- Experience with eCommerce systems and platforms is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain technical trade-offs in business terms.
- Strong ownership, collaboration, and solution-oriented working style.
