Responsibilities
- Own the reliability, performance, availability, and cost efficiency of production Aurora MySQL databases on AWS.
- Build and maintain database observability, metrics, alerting, runbooks, and incident-response practices.
- Diagnose and optimize queries, indexing, replication, schema changes, and database capacity.
- Review application queries before release and educate engineering teams on database best practices.
- Design reader topologies, read-routing strategies, backups, restore testing, failover, disaster recovery, and cost-optimization strategies.
- Implement automated safeguards for runaway queries and maintain visibility into active database execution.
- Partner with the Platform Architect and engineering teams on database workload architecture while handling PHI responsibly in a HIPAA-compliant environment.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in database reliability engineering, database administration, or database engineering, including ownership of production systems at scale.
- Deep MySQL expertise in query optimization, execution-plan analysis, indexing, and replication; Aurora MySQL experience is strongly preferred.
- Hands-on experience operating large, multi-reader Aurora or RDS clusters at terabyte scale, including read-routing and connection management.
- Strong command of Datadog, Percona Monitoring and Management, Performance Insights, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- Proficiency in Python, Bash, or a similar scripting language and comfort with Terraform infrastructure as code.
- Strong AWS operational experience with RDS/Aurora, instance sizing, reserved capacity, storage types, and cost optimization.
- Experience with on-call or incident response and authoring runbooks.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Preferred experience includes Snowflake, Databricks, or Redshift; HIPAA or other compliance-heavy environments; query auto-remediation with pt-kill or Percona Toolkit; PHP; and database or cloud security best practices.
