Responsibilities
- Lead software architecture and system design for highly scalable, distributed, data-intensive search and AI services.
- Define technical architecture for query understanding, orchestration, retrieval, ranking, reranking, and LLM/ML model integration.
- Drive lexical, semantic, vector, and hybrid retrieval architectures.
- Partner with product teams, ML/AI engineers, and leadership on technical roadmaps and production delivery.
- Establish patterns for deploying and operating LLMs and ML models in latency-sensitive search infrastructure.
- Define evaluation approaches for search and AI relevance, retrieval and ranking effectiveness, latency, reliability, and cost.
- Align technical direction with business needs and long-term platform architecture.
- Champion engineering, AI/ML, and operational best practices.
- Hire and mentor senior engineers and help build high-performing engineering teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical work experience.
- 15+ years of experience designing complex software systems, with significant hands-on engineering experience in languages such as Java and cloud platforms such as AWS.
- 5+ years of technical leadership experience in a large and distributed organization designing systems at significant scale.
- Strong experience with information retrieval and search systems, including Lucene, Elasticsearch, or OpenSearch.
- Experience building AI/ML-powered search, recommendation, retrieval, or ranking systems.
- Strong understanding of LLM applications to search, including query understanding, rewriting, expansion, retrieval augmentation, ranking, and reranking.
- Understanding of ML-based ranking, neural rerankers, and/or LLM-based reranking.
- Experience with embeddings, vector search or vector databases, and semantic or hybrid retrieval architectures.
- Understanding of production ML/LLM system lifecycles, including model integration, inference, evaluation, observability, latency, and cost.
- Expertise in cloud infrastructure such as AWS and in distributed systems, scalability, performance, reliability, security, and consistency.
- Experience building multi-tenant SaaS architectures with platform and API-first design.
- Expertise with modern technology stacks, API design, microservices, stream processing, resilience, and operational excellence.
- Experience monitoring and improving complex systems at scale.
- Experience managing security and compliance challenges in cloud products or platforms.
- Preferred qualifications include query orchestration systems, learning-to-rank, neural ranking, cross-encoders, RAG architectures, relevance evaluation, experimentation, ML infrastructure, model serving, and production-scale latency and inference-cost optimization.
