Responsibilities

  • Lead complex squad-level engineering outcomes through hands-on implementation, design judgment, and technical influence.
  • Clarify ambiguous problems, identify constraints, sequence work, and make proportionate, reversible trade-offs.
  • Design and improve services, interfaces, data contracts, distributed systems, production visibility, deployment, rollback, and recovery.
  • Implement high-value changes and remain accountable for production outcomes, resilience, security, accessibility, operability, and sustainability.
  • Review technical changes, including AI-generated designs and code, and explain what should be accepted, changed, or rejected.
  • Diagnose imperfect systems, remove unnecessary complexity, and prevent recurring defects, incidents, and operational toil.
  • Coach engineers through pairing, code and design reviews, mentoring, documentation, and practical problem-solving.
  • Create reusable decisions, patterns, and evidence so squads can operate independently and use shared platforms effectively.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on engineering capability and code-quality judgment in at least one relevant engineering stack.
  • Experience delivering and supporting production technology through its full lifecycle.
  • Confidence working across service or interface design, data, distributed failure, automated testing, continuous integration and delivery, security, and observability.
  • Experience with concerns such as timeouts, retries, backoff, idempotency, concurrency, consistency, compatibility, migration, and failure recovery, or equivalent domain concerns.
  • Ability to create risk-aligned evidence through appropriate unit, integration, component, contract, end-to-end, performance, or resilience testing.
  • Experience with production operations including logging, metrics, traces, alerts, dashboards, incident response, recovery, and reducing recurring toil.
  • A security-, privacy-, risk-, accessibility-, customer-, and regulatory-aware engineering approach.
  • Experience coaching engineers through pairing, reviews, and practical problem-solving.
  • Clear, inclusive communication and the ability to explain technical choices to varied audiences.
  • Relevant experience in areas such as digital engineering, data and AI engineering, contact centre technology, cloud-native engineering, or regulated and high-availability enterprise environments is useful but not required in every area.
  • Ability to use AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly by critically reviewing generated designs and code, validating outputs, and retaining human accountability.
