Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of complex MRI research systems, including a custom full-stack web portal and imaging database.
  • Gather requirements, conduct technical scoping and user consultation, and produce functional specifications.
  • Direct development workflows, sprint planning, backlog prioritization, version control, release processes, and QA.
  • Make technology, framework, data model, and deployment-standard decisions for systems under development.
  • Supervise and mentor junior developers, students, research assistants, and other technical contributors.
  • Coordinate application roll-outs, infrastructure integrations, and change management with cross-functional teams.
  • Create and enforce SOPs, CI/CD protocols, error-tracking procedures, software standards, audit logs, and change histories.
  • Optimize application performance through database tuning, load handling, and bottleneck resolution.
  • Collaborate with research and IT leadership and represent the research group in technical discussions with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Manage the IT support budget for servers and system performance monitoring.
  • Contribute technical architecture, documentation, and deliverables to grant writing, institutional reporting, and research initiatives.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required; computer science is strongly preferred.
  • At least two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the design and deployment of institutional-level software systems.
  • Strong full-stack engineering, technical mentoring, and DevOps workflow experience is preferred.
  • Experience with front-end and back-end database development, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, shell scripting, and Linux/Unix is preferred.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming, graphical user interface design, or medical imaging methods is an asset.
  • Interest in applying machine learning techniques to research data is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, written communication, organization, problem-solving, prioritization, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, exercise discretion, and meet deadlines.

Benefits

  • Monthly base salary range of CAD $6,631.67-$9,533.25.
  • Fixed-term position with a job end date of August 31, 2027.
  • Work is based at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health on UBC's Point Grey campus in an office and secured pen-office environment with a networked PC and Internet access.
