Responsibilities

  • Own the guidance firmware and virtual fencing logic on animal collars, including design, implementation, testing, mass deployment, and ongoing production support.
  • Design guidance algorithms, state machines, geometry for virtual fences and paths, and low-bandwidth radio communication protocols.
  • Build reliable, power- and memory-constrained real-time software in modern C++ on FreeRTOS.
  • Debug intermittent field issues using logs, telemetry, and system and animal understanding.
  • Collaborate with firmware, backend, frontend, design, and animal experts, including observing animals in the field.
  • Improve guidance-system quality, reliability, tooling, and defect detection before deployment.
  • Support and mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, and context sharing.

Requirements

  • Solid experience shipping software for resource-constrained systems such as embedded devices, consoles, or real-time engines.
  • Strong C++ fundamentals and software design-pattern knowledge.
  • Comfort with concurrency, limited memory and stack, and real-time behavior.
  • Ability to reason about geometry, probability, timing, inaccurate sensor data, unexpected animal behavior, and unclear requirements.
  • Strong ownership and ability to follow problems through to root cause.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Experience with state machines or pathfinding is a bonus.
  • Experience with FreeRTOS or similar real-time operating-system internals, interrupts, scheduling, priorities, and timing guarantees is a bonus.
  • Experience with safety-critical systems or unreliable, low-bandwidth communication links is a bonus.
  • Experience with animals or curiosity about farming, animal welfare, and outdoor hardware is a bonus.

Benefits

  • Wellness leave, unlimited paid annual leave, and Southern Cross Health Insurance.
  • Six months of fully paid parental leave for primary caregivers and four weeks of fully paid secondary caregiver leave, plus other parental benefits.
  • Annual $1000 self-development budget.
  • Employee stock ownership plan, remuneration benefits, and daily snacks and drinks.
  • Office-first work arrangement with working from the office every day as the default, with flexibility when needed.
