Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain secure, modular, horizontally scalable backend microservices.
- Own gRPC/Protobuf contracts and REST/OpenAPI APIs, including versioning and backward compatibility.
- Build high-throughput Apache Kafka streaming pipelines with scalable consumers and stream-processing topologies.
- Model and optimize distributed NoSQL, search/indexing, and caching systems for consistency, idempotency, and retention requirements.
- Implement durable multi-step verification workflows across services and vendor boundaries.
- Optimize coroutine concurrency, backpressure, autoscaling, throughput, and sub-second verification latency.
- Drive technical architecture, mentor engineers, and collaborate with Machine Learning, Infrastructure, and Product teams.
- Use AI coding assistants and internal tooling for design, implementation, testing, and code review.
- Apply AI/ML-driven analysis to improve pipeline performance, capacity forecasting, anomaly detection, and decision logic.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend/server software engineering experience delivering production-grade distributed services or platforms.
- Deep Kotlin proficiency or strong Java experience transitioning to Kotlin, including JVM concurrency and Kotlin Coroutines.
- Hands-on experience with microservice architectures, gRPC/Protobuf, REST, API design, and inter-service communication.
- Experience with event streaming and asynchronous messaging, preferably Apache Kafka, including idempotent processing and failure handling.
- Practical experience with distributed NoSQL databases, search/indexing systems, and caching at scale.
- Experience operating cloud-native services on Kubernetes, with familiarity with containers, service meshes, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Expertise in memory management, thread/coroutine concurrency, connection pooling, and payload optimization for latency-sensitive workloads.
- Daily hands-on use of AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor, with the ability to evaluate generated code for correctness, security, and performance.
- Working understanding of LLM and ML production behavior, including latency, cost, and failure modes.
- Preferred experience includes identity verification or KYC systems, biometric liveness or document-authenticity engines, Temporal or Cadence, ML model serving or integration, OpenTelemetry, multi-region services, CI/CD, Helm, and secrets management.
Benefits
- Full-time permanent position with health, dental, vision, retirement plans with company match, paid time off, parental leave, and an annual education and training stipend equivalent to $1,000 in local currency.
- Hybrid work model with typical workdays three days per week at a hub location, ideally Vancouver; remote arrangements may be available for the right candidate.
- Flexible workplace amenities may include weekly lunches, coffee, social events, parent rooms, gyms, lounges, and adaptable workstations.
- Wellness workshops and events plus a complimentary Headspace subscription.
- Employee resource groups and an inclusive, collaborative workplace.
