Responsibilities

  • Design and build a reusable on-device inference framework covering runtime, model integration, sampling, preprocessing, memory and flash budgeting, and OTA model updates.
  • Architect, implement, deploy, and debug the platform on devices in the field.
  • Integrate inference into Zephyr or FreeRTOS firmware while maintaining stability, scheduling, and power efficiency.
  • Develop low-level drivers and DMA, SPI/I²C, and middleware data paths, and debug firmware and hardware issues using physical instrumentation.
  • Deploy, quantize, optimize, and validate models on resource-constrained microcontroller hardware while balancing accuracy, power, latency, and footprint.
  • Contribute to regular firmware features, bug fixes, field issues, on-call, and triage when ML work is lighter.
  • Set technical direction for on-device ML and align firmware, app, cloud, data science, hardware, and operations teams.
  • Ship 2–3 on-device ML features to the Pet GPS fleet and root-cause production issues using device logs.
  • Use AI tools across firmware and ML development and raise the team’s embedded-ML and AI-native engineering fluency through reviews, documentation, and pairing.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of firmware engineering experience taking complex consumer hardware from prototype through mass production and shipping at scale.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Deep C/C++ embedded-systems experience and strong familiarity with RTOS internals such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
  • Experience with SPI, I²C, UART, DMA, interrupts, driver development, hands-on hardware debugging, and power and memory optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience deploying ML models on microcontroller-class hardware in a shipping product.
  • Hands-on experience with TFLite Micro, CMSIS-NN, ExecuTorch, or equivalent embedded inference frameworks, plus quantization and pruning.
  • Ability to develop and train models, and experience with sensor-data and signal-processing pipelines such as IMU data.
  • Daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, with critical review of generated output.
  • Strong written communication and experience documenting technical decisions across firmware, hardware, and data science.
  • Preferred experience includes connected-device security and compliance, cellular, BLE, GPS/GNSS, audio subsystems, new-board bring-up, schematic review, manufacturing test, and production-line debugging.

Benefits

  • Remote-first work environment, available remotely within the US and Canada.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; US employee plans are 100% paid and Canadian employees receive supplemental medical and dental plans.
  • 401(k) with company matching in the US, or RRSP with DPSP in Canada.
  • Employee Assistance Program for mental wellness.
  • Flexible paid time off and 12 company-wide days off.
  • Winter and Summer Weeklong Synchronized Company Shutdowns.
  • Learning and development programs.
  • Equipment, tools, and reimbursement support for a productive remote environment.
  • Free Life360 Platinum Membership and Tile products.
