Responsibilities
- Build, deploy, maintain, and operate production backend services with ownership from architecture and data modeling through ongoing support.
- Develop scalable data architectures, REST APIs, event-driven systems, streaming platforms, and batch processing pipelines.
- Ingest, process, store, index, and deliver high-volume scientific, media, and geospatial data, including real-time streaming workloads.
- Build backend infrastructure, APIs, and data pipelines supporting machine learning and agentic AI applications in production.
- Deploy, monitor, and operate services in Kubernetes-based containerized environments using infrastructure automation practices.
- Partner with scientists, machine learning engineers, and platform teams to translate evolving requirements into scalable systems.
- Contribute to technical architecture decisions, engineering standards, and the evolution of OceanX’s backend and data platform.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- At least three years of professional backend engineering experience building and operating production systems.
- Strong Python proficiency and experience developing, testing, and maintaining production APIs and backend services using FastAPI or comparable frameworks.
- Expertise in distributed backend systems, REST APIs, event-driven architectures, streaming platforms, and batch processing pipelines.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and large-scale, time-series, scientific, or other high-volume data workloads.
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes-based production services, CI/CD pipelines, trunk-based development, GitOps, and infrastructure automation.
- Proven ability to evolve early-stage solutions into scalable, reliable, and maintainable production systems.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools and collaborating with cross-functional technical and business stakeholders.
- Knowledge of DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering principles, including observability, monitoring, infrastructure automation, and reliability practices, is highly desirable.
- Experience with NATS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar distributed messaging and streaming platforms is advantageous.
- Experience with geospatial data and technologies such as PostGIS, GIS data formats, tile or feature servers, and spatial data processing workflows is strongly preferred.
- Experience building, integrating, or supporting machine learning, LLM, or agentic AI systems in production is a plus.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally, work flexible hours across time zones, adapt to varying workloads, and collaborate effectively.
