Responsibilities
- Define and own the multi-year technical vision and strategic plans for Docker’s foundational platform across accounts, billing, data, enterprise governance, and infrastructure.
- Make architectural decisions and establish principles, standards, and technical contracts that guide multiple engineering organizations.
- Lead cross-company programs across Desktop, Hub, AI, Security, Cloud, and Platform teams.
- Architect unified control planes for access control, usage, billing, identity, and enterprise governance.
- Drive convergence from fragmented product-specific systems to shared authentication, authorization, billing, observability, and platform capabilities.
- Design usage-based billing, metering, aggregation, rating, invoicing, revenue recognition, and enterprise pricing architecture.
- Design identity, account, centralized authorization, group management, RBAC, policy, entitlement, and enterprise administration platforms.
- Architect audit logging, observability, data models, real-time streaming, self-service data, analytics, and machine-learning data foundations.
- Define infrastructure and deployment patterns that improve security, scaling, monitoring, reliability, AI environment creation, and developer velocity.
- Drive cost optimization and build-versus-buy decisions for critical platform components.
- Work with senior managers and directors, advise executives on technical strategy, and represent Docker’s platform architecture externally.
- Mentor Staff and Principal engineers and raise the organization’s technical bar.
- Participate in on-call rotations, respond to incidents, debug production issues, and improve system reliability.
Requirements
- 12+ years of software engineering experience across multiple platform domains such as identity, billing, data, and infrastructure.
- Proven experience architecting and delivering large-scale distributed systems serving millions of users and thousands of enterprise customers.
- Deep expertise in at least two of identity/access management, billing/monetization, data platforms, or cloud infrastructure, with broad knowledge across the remaining domains.
- Expert understanding of API design, service architecture, and system integration patterns at scale.
- Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and modern infrastructure patterns including Kubernetes, service mesh, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Track record translating business strategy into technical architecture and roadmaps that enable revenue growth, cost reduction, or market expansion.
- Experience driving large cross-company technical programs and influencing technical direction without direct authority.
- Experience working with VPs and executives to set and execute technical strategy.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and developing technical leadership.
- Experience building enterprise platforms with complex governance and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of enterprise security requirements and compliance frameworks including SOC 2 and ISO 27001.
- Experience with identity federation using OIDC, SAML, and SCIM and enterprise SSO integration at scale.
- Understanding of enterprise billing complexity including contract management, usage-based pricing, and revenue recognition.
- Preferred experience in developer tools, infrastructure software, or B2B SaaS at significant scale.
- Preferred background with container technologies, Docker, Kubernetes, or developer productivity platforms.
- Preferred experience building billing platforms supporting seat-based, consumption, and hybrid pricing models.
- Preferred experience migrating legacy systems while maintaining business continuity.
- Preferred data platform architecture experience including real-time streaming, data warehousing, and analytics.
- Preferred knowledge of FinOps and infrastructure cost optimization at scale.
- An advanced degree and external technical leadership recognition through speaking, publications, or open source contributions are preferred.
