Base Salary
$163k - $204k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for Canadian payroll on Gusto’s Ruby on Rails platform.
- Connect backend logic to the frontend through well-designed GraphQL APIs.
- Own a primary domain within Payroll Canada, ensuring correctness and scalability.
- Act as a technical partner across Product, Design, Data, Compliance, and Operations.
- Author and drive architecture and design documents for long-term platform goals.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve code quality and accelerate development.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a focus on backend development.
- Comfortable with full-stack work, even if backend is the primary strength.
- Experience applying AI tools to enhance development and code quality.
- Ability to work with large, complex codebases and improve them incrementally.
- Strong systems thinking and design skills for performance and reliability.
- Experience collaborating across teams and communicating technical complexity.
- Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages, preferably Ruby.
- Interest or experience in payroll, tax, or compliance domains is a plus.
