Base Salary
$171k - $267k/yr
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction for the Fable backend through technical design documents, architecture reviews, and concrete backend designs.
- Own backend reliability and platform health across staging, databases, queues, costs, and observability.
- Lead end-to-end incident response, postmortems, and follow-through on corrective actions.
- Represent the Fable backend in cross-team planning and coordinate cross-functional execution.
- Mentor engineers through pull request reviews, pairing, design leadership, and operational standards.
- Build and evolve the backend platform so the team can ship faster and more safely.
- Introduce and improve agentic engineering practices and workflows within the team.
Requirements
- 10+ years of backend experience, including meaningful Python/Django experience and experience with another stack such as Go, Node, Java, or Kotlin.
- Experience operating production systems on a major cloud with OLTP databases at scale, container orchestration, queueing, and CI/CD.
- A track record of owning incidents end-to-end and ensuring follow-through.
- Ability to write technical design documents that are useful to staff-level peers and understandable to product leaders.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with product, design, and ML partners.
- Pragmatic problem-solving approach with strong systems thinking and focus on root causes.
- Hands-on experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows in production.
- Preferred experience with subscription and entitlements systems such as Stripe or RevenueCat, platform or infrastructure migrations, and recommendation or feed systems.
