Responsibilities
- Build extremely large-scale platform products and services used by Roku engineers and consumers across millions of devices.
- Collaborate with Product and Design teams to take software from ideation through production deployment and support.
- Lead technology evaluations and promote development best practices through code and design reviews.
- Design and implement backend services and work with a range of data platforms.
- Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
- Participate in scoping, technical design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development, verify outputs, and work effectively in unfamiliar codebases.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems.
- 5+ years of experience working with cloud-based platforms and infrastructure.
- Understanding of eventual consistency, the CAP theorem, and related system concepts.
- Deep experience building Java microservices for Docker or Kubernetes container platforms.
- Strong understanding of databases such as Aurora MySQL and DynamoDB.
- Hands-on experience with AWS ALB, ECS, RDS, or similar cloud services.
- Experience with REST, WebSockets, HTTPS, JSON, Protobuf, and other protocols and data formats.
- Ability to lead backend service design and implementation and drive consensus with senior team members.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
- Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks, with examples of shipped work.
