Responsibilities

  • Build resilient, massively scalable backend solutions for millions of Proton VPN users.
  • Collaborate with backend engineers, architects, client application developers, and product management to meet business and reliability requirements.
  • Document backend capabilities and proper integration patterns for Proton VPN clients.
  • Debug and repair critical systems, including file-revision cleanup and user-quota recovery.
  • Lead a team initiative from discovery through production.

Requirements

  • Experience with PHP-based entry points to a backend software stack and scalable solution development.
  • Experience with profiling methods and tools.
  • Solid understanding of SQL, preferably MySQL, and data modeling.
  • Solid understanding of Redis or other caching technologies.
  • Solid understanding of security best practices and HTTP/REST APIs, including developing and consuming web APIs.
  • High-level understanding of cryptography concepts, including key exchange and symmetric versus asymmetric encryption.
  • Preferred qualifications include SRE or on-call operations, Docker or similar containerization technologies, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Python, Rust, and OpenAPI or similar API documentation frameworks.
