Responsibilities
- Own the design and delivery of significant backend systems and services across a product domain.
- Lead complex multi-sprint initiatives spanning multiple engineers and stakeholders.
- Identify bottlenecks, propose architectural changes, and execute safe production scaling and migration work.
- Design and operate distributed and event-driven systems with attention to consistency, idempotency, partitioning, retries, observability, and failure handling.
- Contribute to decisions about service boundaries, data ownership, and platform evolution.
- Conduct code reviews, mentor senior and mid-level engineers, and raise engineering standards.
- Partner with Product, Data Engineering, editorial, legal, and financial domain experts to scope and deliver work.
- Improve developer experience through tooling, testing, observability, paved-road development, and legacy-system cleanup.
- Use AI-assisted engineering for system understanding, prototyping, and code delivery.
Requirements
- Several years of senior backend engineering experience and a record of leading technical initiatives end to end across a product domain.
- Production experience designing distributed systems and handling failure modes, observability, data consistency, and graceful degradation.
- Demonstrated success solving database scaling, throughput, latency, or cost problems.
- Experience designing and operating production event-driven architectures using message queues or streaming systems.
- Strong API, service-boundary, persistent-storage, and client data-flow design skills.
- Strong Python experience, including modern web frameworks such as FastAPI, with Pydantic and strong typing.
- Deep knowledge of SQL and relational data modeling.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, including explaining complex systems and tradeoffs to nontechnical stakeholders.
- Strong product and customer mindset with sound judgment balancing delivery and long-term system health.
- High standards for code quality, testability, and operational maturity, with a record of improving teams through review and mentorship.
- Experience with complex permissioning or access-control systems is nice to have.
- Experience with document-management systems, security practices, legacy modernization, workload migration, data-pipeline orchestration, or AI and LLM-based solutions is nice to have.
