Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end query performance, including execution-plan analysis, shard-key and index design, statistics, join strategy, and p99 latency reduction.
- Design and evolve physical data models covering sharding, partitioning, sort keys, retention, and lakehouse table layouts.
- Run SingleStore in production on Kubernetes, including capacity planning, node topology, operator-driven upgrades, backups, restores, and failure design.
- Tune Kafka, Flink, and Spark ingestion pipelines, including parallelism, checkpointing, backpressure, throughput, and data freshness.
- Build observability for performance regressions, including query-level metrics, slow-query workflows, and load-test harnesses.
- Partner with product and platform teams on schema and query contracts and provide technical direction for scalable designs.
- Own production systems through on-call responsibilities, incident investigation, and capacity planning.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend, data, or infrastructure engineering experience, including 3+ years focused on distributed database or analytical query performance.
- Deep knowledge of database internals, execution plans, sharding, partitioning, indexing, join distribution, skew, spills, lock contention, and memory pressure.
- Hands-on experience with a distributed OLAP, HTAP, or MPP engine such as SingleStore, ClickHouse, Druid, Pinot, Trino/Presto, Snowflake, Redshift, or Vertica.
- Strong data-modeling judgment for read-heavy, latency-sensitive serving workloads.
- Production experience with Kafka and at least one of Apache Flink or Spark Structured Streaming, including performance and throughput tuning.
- Working knowledge of table formats such as Apache Iceberg, Delta, or Hudi, including partitioning, file sizing, and compaction.
- Production Kubernetes experience with operators, StatefulSets, resource management, persistent storage, and safe upgrades of stateful workloads.
- Expert SQL skills plus Python or Go experience.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and cloud operations using Terraform, Helm, and AWS.
- Proven ownership of production systems, including on-call, incident investigation, and capacity planning.
- Preferred experience includes SingleStore on Kubernetes, Iceberg at scale, multi-region or multi-tenant SaaS, performance engineering practices, CI regression gates, load testing, or cloud security/CNAPP.
