Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, monitor, and operate JVM-based microservices using primarily Java and Kotlin.
- Own backend services end to end, including architecture, implementation, deployment, monitoring, on-call participation, and continuous improvement.
- Develop high-performance, scalable, low-latency distributed and event-driven systems using asynchronous programming, backpressure, efficient I/O, memory management, and garbage-collection tuning.
- Build and evolve Kafka-based streaming systems, including partitioning, consumer groups, consumer-lag management, idempotency, and schema evolution.
- Instrument services with metrics, logs, and traces; define SLIs and SLOs and use error budgets to improve reliability.
- Design REST and gRPC APIs and implement resilient service-to-service communication using timeouts, retries, and circuit breakers.
- Automate CI/CD, testing, operational tasks, and developer productivity improvements through tooling and infrastructure as code.
- Participate in monitoring, alerting, incident response, postmortems, design reviews, code reviews, technical standards, and peer mentorship.
- Collaborate with product, architecture, and cross-functional partners to deliver customer outcomes.
Requirements
- Strong experience building and operating production-grade backend services on the JVM using Java and/or Kotlin.
- Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts including consistency, partitioning, replication, fault tolerance, and microservice design.
- Hands-on experience with asynchronous and reactive programming, such as CompletableFuture, Project Reactor, RxJava, or Kotlin coroutines.
- Experience with Kafka or similar streaming technologies, including topic and partition strategy, consumer lag, idempotency, and schema compatibility, is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with REST and gRPC API design, service-to-service communication, and resilience patterns.
- Practical experience with containers, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience operating production services through monitoring, alerting, incident response, and postmortems.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to write design documents and collaborate across teams.
- Preferred experience includes JVM performance profiling and tuning with JFR, async-profiler, or JMH; Avro, Protobuf, schema registries, Kafka Streams, Flink, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, OpenTelemetry, and technical mentorship or leadership in reliability and performance initiatives.
