Responsibilities
- Serve as a domain expert on database architecture, infrastructure design, security posture, and data management strategy.
- Establish and enforce database operational best practices, change control standards, and process improvements.
- Resolve high-severity database incidents, architectural risks, and security vulnerabilities through escalation management and root-cause analysis.
- Architect and tune large-scale OLTP environments for high throughput and low latency.
- Design and maintain high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions using Always-On Availability Groups, replication, and continuous recovery strategies.
- Lead database patching, version upgrades, backups, restores, and decommissioning initiatives.
- Lead technology projects and teams building distributed microservices and full-stack systems for regulatory needs.
- Develop cloud-based solutions and collaborate with product managers, architects, and Agile teams.
- Provide technical direction, define service boundaries and integration patterns, reduce technical debt, and influence technology strategy.
- Mentor junior and mid-level DBAs and engineers and promote professional development.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field is required.
- At least 4 years of software engineering experience is required; internship experience does not apply.
- At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies is required.
- Preferred qualifications include a master's degree, SQL Server administration and architecture, high-volume performance tuning, Always-On Availability Groups, transactional replication, database security, audit readiness, SOX, and PCI compliance.
- Preferred experience includes 7+ years coding with more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
- Preferred experience includes 3+ years with database management systems, cloud technologies, front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, automated testing frameworks, Git-based version control, and cloud troubleshooting.
- Preferred experience includes 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks and 4+ years creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
- Preferred experience includes mentoring engineers, using observability to optimize distributed-system performance, leading cross-functional engineering initiatives, and enforcing coding standards and design patterns.
- Experience with modern AI-based coding tools, IDE copilots, and interactive AI tooling beyond basic code completion is preferred.

- Full-time annual base salary is $179,400-$204,700 for roles based in Chicago or Riverwoods, Illinois; other locations have location-specific ranges.
