Responsibilities
- Own backend features or components through technical direction, design, implementation, testing, documentation, release, and post-release health.
- Design and review integration and protocol interfaces that customers can extend and customize without forking the product.
- Define versioning and backward-compatibility strategies for public contracts and enforce them through design and code reviews.
- Design systems for rate limits, timeouts, partial responses, remote-system failures, high throughput, and long-running operations.
- Investigate escalated customer integration failures across platform, network, and remote systems, driving root-cause fixes and preventive changes.
- Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks.
- Mentor IC1 and IC2 engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing.
- Collaborate with product management, user experience, quality engineering, and adjacent platform teams on scope and delivery.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience owning backend systems or services in production.
- Expert-level Java or JavaScript/Node.js skills and strong computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, memory management, and performance profiling.
- Experience designing REST/SOAP APIs, integration frameworks, extension points, versioning strategies, and backward-compatible public contracts.
- Strong knowledge of OAuth 2.0, JSON Web Tokens, mutual TLS, API key authentication, token lifecycle, credential storage, and security hardening.
- Experience with distributed systems, retries, idempotency, backpressure, rate limiting, circuit breaking, graceful degradation, observability, and production debugging.
- Experience with data modeling, SQL, indexing strategies, query optimization, and diagnosing slow queries at scale.
- Experience with automated unit, integration, contract, and performance testing and with improving team test strategy.
- Experience designing, consuming, and debugging integrations with third-party systems, including inconsistent or undocumented behavior.
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical design discussions.
- Experience with ServiceNow platform scripting and Flow Designer spoke development, or ability to ramp up quickly.
- Agile, sprint-based development experience and clear written communication through design documents and technical decision records.
- Preferred experience includes JSON-RPC, WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, streaming or long-lived connections, AWS EKS, Azure Kubernetes Service, Google Kubernetes Engine, Model Context Protocol, tool or function calling, agent-facing APIs, JDBC, ODBC, database connectivity, query engine internals, SDKs, connectors, integration frameworks, and React or a comparable frontend framework.
