Responsibilities
- Develop secure, well-tested, and performant features using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for source code workflows.
- Improve reliability through performance and SQL tuning, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency.
- Monitor production health metrics, participate in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshoot incidents, perform root cause analysis, and improve system observability.
- Use and critically review AI agent output for appropriately scoped work.
- Write maintainable code, contribute to code reviews, and advocate for GitLab engineering standards.
- Collaborate with product management, design, testing, security, user experience research, technical writing, Gitaly, Code Review, and other Source Code teams.
- Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and daily collaboration.
Requirements
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Strong understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance best practices.
- Experience improving complex user-facing workflows and making underlying systems reliable and maintainable.
- Experience writing backend unit, integration, and acceptance tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review.
- Experience using AI coding agents to scope tasks, review output, and assess limitations in a complex monorepo.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills in a remote, asynchronous environment.
- Ability to manage priorities independently, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance on difficult-to-reverse decisions.
