Responsibilities

  • Interface with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to define Layer 1 features.
  • Architect, design, and manage development of Layer 1 software features.
  • Develop and maintain features using C, C++, and Python, including code reviews and design specifications.
  • Build automated tests and test infrastructure for Layer 1 features.
  • Develop instrumentation and telemetry tools to monitor and troubleshoot physical link health.
  • Collaborate with hardware, optics, manufacturing, customer support, and system test teams to bring components to market and resolve problems.
  • Design software control interfaces for Layer 1 hardware components.
  • Own projects from definition through deployment and customer interactions.
  • Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools.
  • Mentor new and junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience; or a master’s degree plus 6 years; or a Ph.D. plus 3 years; or equivalent work experience.
  • Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python.
  • Knowledge of UNIX or Linux.
  • Applied understanding of software engineering principles.
  • Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to independently design solutions and implement features.
  • Ability to work in small teams.
  • Knowledge of digital communication technologies such as modulation and signal encoding schemes is preferred.
  • Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems is preferred.
  • Experience with low-level hardware components is preferred.
