Responsibilities
- Design the architecture for research data, compute, pipelines, evaluation, and reproducibility.
- Build affordable reprocessing workflows so analyses can be rerun with changed parameters without repeating unnecessary work.
- Create reusable evaluation, comparison, and simulation harnesses accessible to scientists and analysis agents.
- Provide reproducible environments, cloud resources, trusted dataset access, and cost-aware compute provisioning.
- Establish appropriate testing, CI, repository, and engineering standards across a codebase largely written by scientists.
- Improve the research-to-software interface and generate IEC 62304 regulatory traceability artifacts from CI.
- Mentor junior developers and shape the research platform engineering function as it grows.
Requirements
- Substantial software or platform engineering experience, particularly building tooling for scientists, researchers, or quants.
- Deep Python experience and experience with pipeline or workflow systems where correctness and reproducibility are important.
- Experience with cloud compute and storage, preferably AWS, along with containerization and infrastructure-as-code.
- Evidence of building tools that users voluntarily adopt.
- Ability to understand scientific analyses, abstract them appropriately, and challenge flawed evaluations constructively.
- Experience raising engineering standards without formal authority and defining a new function in a small team.
- Preferred experience includes regulated environments, IEC 62304, software as a medical device, time-series or signal-processing workloads, physiological data, scientific instrumentation, experiment tracking, model registries, MLOps tooling, behavior-driven testing, specification-by-example, agent-assisted workflows, or being a first platform hire in a science organization.
