Responsibilities
- Own and communicate the technical strategy for the Partner Connect domain.
- Design scalable systems for partner customer-data ingestion, storage, and serving to ToastIQ and AI agents.
- Create automated, self-service partner onboarding with sandbox provisioning and production transition workflows.
- Define frameworks, contracts, and standards for publishing events and exposing APIs across Toast engineering teams.
- Build partnerships across Commerce, platform, and product organizations to align technical direction with company goals.
- Partner with engineering and product management to turn vision into an executable roadmap while balancing new architecture with production systems.
- Raise the technical bar through architecture, design, and code reviews, and mentor engineers across levels.
- Guide the team toward greater scale, monitoring, and operational maturity.
- Use AI-powered engineering tools and help establish responsible practices for evaluating their output.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience designing and delivering complex, scalable backend systems.
- Demonstrated technical leadership and influence beyond the immediate team, including technical directions adopted by other teams.
- Deep experience with distributed, event-driven architectures and APIs using Java, Kotlin, Scala, or a similar language on a major cloud platform.
- Strong data architecture and schema design judgment for systems with evolving requirements.
- Experience owning a platform or shared service with internal consumers and measuring consumer success.
- Ability to establish direction in ambiguous problem spaces without an existing playbook.
- Strong customer-first orientation toward developer integrations and user experience.
- Excellent written communication, especially for technical design documentation across multiple time zones.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including respect, empathy, humility, and commitment to developing other engineers.
- Comfort using AI-powered engineering tools to improve productivity, code quality, and technical decisions.
- Experience championing responsible and secure AI adoption across engineering teams is preferred.
