Responsibilities
- Define application architecture models, programming standards, and recommended languages and tools.
- Analyze complex technical problems and present solutions spanning multiple engineering teams.
- Collaborate with product managers to manage technical scope and deliverables for the product roadmap.
- Work with engineers across Dow Jones and News Corp to build products and leverage shared technologies.
- Handle and oversee deployments to production environments.
- Design and implement developer, testing, application monitoring and control, change management, and implementation practices.
- Define standards for designing, building, and maintaining applications, components, and common services.
- Identify strategic technical debt, evaluate its cost and benefit, and recommend prioritization timelines.
- Delegate effectively, remove team roadblocks, and champion scalability, usability, reliability, functionality, and performance.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2–4 years in a lead engineering role.
- Knowledge of commercial B2C and B2B digital product business models.
- Substantial experience building online subscription products, advertising and privacy technologies, and high-traffic websites.
- Strong understanding of JavaScript and web development best practices, with advanced CSS knowledge including Grid, Flexbox, Media Queries, Container Queries, and Transitions.
- Experience using AI tools such as Copilot, Claude Code, and OpenAI to improve productivity and build consumer-facing products.
- Familiarity with designing and developing agentic software solutions.
- Experience collaborating with engineers on large-scale projects.
- Knowledge of web development, service-oriented architecture, cloud computing, test-driven development, and domain-driven design.
- Understanding of computer architecture, data structures, memory management, algorithms, and networking.
- Fluency in Node.js and significant hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, or other cloud providers.
- Exposure to Docker or other container-based application deployment.
- Experience with Express.js, React, Redis, Next.js, Terraform, Webpack, Elasticsearch, GraphQL, React Native, and related data and application technologies.
- A BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent is a plus.

- The role is based in Barcelona and offers a base pay range of EUR 65,000–75,000 per year.
