Responsibilities
- Architect and implement the core C++ runtime for a large-scale interactive wargaming platform.
- Own the structure, performance, and long-term health of the engine codebase.
- Design ECS architecture, data-oriented component storage, entity lifecycle management, system queries, execution graphs, and dependency-aware scheduling.
- Define interfaces and extension points for physics, AI, sensor, weapon, behavior, and environmental models.
- Develop simulation loops, time stepping, event processing, deterministic replay, multithreaded execution, and task-based parallelism.
- Optimize memory layout, allocation, cache locality, serialization, data movement, CPU utilization, latency, throughput, and simulation rate.
- Build spatial indexing, collision-candidate, visibility, proximity-query, checkpointing, snapshotting, replication, save-and-restore, and distributed-simulation systems.
- Integrate physics and mathematical models and build tooling for entity inspection, debugging, profiling, and simulation-state analysis.
- Lead engine design reviews, mentor programmers, conduct code reviews, and remain hands-on in implementation, profiling, and debugging.
Requirements
- Extensive professional C++ development experience or equivalent experience building performance-critical production software.
- Significant commercial game development, game-engine development, or similarly performance-constrained real-time experience.
- Experience shipping at least one commercial game, engine, platform, or interactive real-time product.
- Demonstrated ownership of foundational engine systems and experience building or extending a physics engine, game engine, simulation runtime, ECS, job system, or comparable core technology.
- Expert command of modern C++, including object lifetimes, ownership, templates, concurrency, synchronization, profiling, and low-level debugging.
- Strong understanding of data-oriented design, memory layout, cache behavior, allocation strategies, and performance-sensitive data structures.
- Experience with engine loops, execution graphs, task systems, event systems, dependency management, runtime scheduling, APIs, plugin systems, SDKs, or extension frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to optimize against hard CPU, memory, latency, and frame- or tick-time budgets using commercial profiling and debugging tools.
- Working knowledge of real-time physics concepts including coordinate systems, numerical integration, collision detection, spatial partitioning, constraints, and simulation stability.
- Experience maintaining a large C++ codebase, leading major technical initiatives, and remaining an active individual contributor.
- Active Secret clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
- Preferred qualifications include SIMD, GPU compute, custom allocators, job systems, lock-free structures, platform-specific optimization, large-world simulation, serialization, snapshotting, replay, world partitioning, or streaming experience.
- Preferred familiarity includes aerospace, robotics, autonomy, defense simulations, HLA, DIS, OneSAF, JSAF, NGTS, STK, AFISM, and models for sensors, weapons, electronic warfare, jamming, communications, logistics, or command and control.
- The role is open at Senior, Staff, or Principal level, with stated experience expectations of 5+, 7+, or 10+ years respectively.
