Responsibilities
- Build and operate Shopify’s CDC and data materialization platforms.
- Ensure platform throughput, freshness, reliability, and scalability for event-driven systems.
- Solve complex production issues at scale and participate in the required on-call rotation.
- Contribute to open-source and vendor codebases.
- Lead execution on impactful projects, including scoping, structuring, and driving delivery.
- Collaborate with Shopify teams, external vendors, leadership, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Develop cross-team RFCs and leadership briefs while improving engineering and operational excellence.
- Use and shape AI practices for design, coding, and collaboration.
Requirements
- Experience with or strong interest in streaming technologies such as Debezium and Kafka, processing technologies such as Flink, or databases such as Yugabyte, MySQL, and BigQuery.
- Experience building or operating CDC pipelines, working inside distributed databases, or debugging streaming systems under production load is a bonus.
- Strong coding patterns in any language, with Java or Go preferred.
- Experience operating large distributed systems at scale.
- Ability to act decisively and make progress through ambiguous technical problems.
- Experience leading projects by scoping work, structuring execution, building momentum, and driving decisions.
- Willingness and ability to participate in required on-call work.
- Ability to complete a live pair-programming interview using the candidate’s own IDE.
