Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and document core Tailscale client-side networking software.
  • Develop connectivity features between clients, subnet routers, exit nodes, and customer network infrastructure.
  • Apply and extend industry networking protocols alongside Tailscale-specific designs and frameworks.
  • Optimize software performance, reliability, and scalability across technical platforms and hardware.
  • Provide architectural insights and resolve complex customer network connectivity issues.
  • Support customer success teams with critical network escalations.
  • Contribute to relevant open-source projects and collaborate with product management and engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Significant experience developing networking software and diagnosing networking issues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of routing, VPNs, IP address management, and NAT traversal.
  • Proficiency in Go or another low-level language such as C, C++, or Rust.
  • Strong understanding of concurrent programming and performance optimization techniques.
  • Large-scale distributed-systems experience is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of low-level operating-system network stacks is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to a dynamic startup environment, and give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
