Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of AI-driven software applications and personalization features.
- Build scalable, personalized applications using real-time data, behavioral analytics, recommendation systems, and AI-driven decisioning.
- Architect cloud-native distributed systems that balance performance, reliability, security, and rapid experimentation.
- Drive adoption of shared personalization frameworks and reusable tools across engineering teams.
- Establish long-term technical strategy for the personalization platform and make architectural decisions spanning multiple teams.
- Develop and operate machine learning models, LLM-based systems, and real-time decisioning capabilities in production.
- Design event-driven architectures, shared backend platforms, APIs, observability solutions, and reusable frameworks.
- Deliver high-quality production software and automated tests in a continuous integration and delivery environment.
- Partner with product management, mentor engineers, and influence cross-functional stakeholders on technical trade-offs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
- At least 12 years of progressively responsible experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
- Eight years of experience designing and developing large-scale software applications using object-oriented design, Java, Spring, and related enterprise frameworks.
- Eight years of experience designing and operating highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems using microservices architectures.
- Eight years of experience designing service-oriented and API-based architectures using REST and GraphQL, including schema design and API governance.
- Eight years of experience building shared backend platforms and reusable frameworks for multiple engineering teams.
- Seven years of experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native systems deployed on Google Cloud Platform.
- Seven years of experience with real-time event-driven architectures and messaging or streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka or AMQ.
- Seven years of experience with large-scale customer data, behavioral analytics, feature engineering, distributed data processing, and cloud-based data services.
- Six years of experience developing personalization and recommendation systems using rule-based systems, machine learning, ranking, and decisioning logic.
- Five years of experience deploying and operating machine learning models in production using platforms such as Google Vertex AI.
- Five years of experience designing AI-driven decisioning systems using predictive models, real-time context, and experimentation frameworks.
- Four years of experience developing and integrating LLM-based systems with prompt orchestration, tool or function calling, and production evaluation.
- Six years of experience designing observability solutions for distributed systems, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and reliability monitoring.
- Six years of experience designing AI-powered systems with privacy, security, explainability, and governance requirements in regulated environments.
- Five years of experience driving cross-organizational technical strategy, mentoring engineers, and influencing stakeholders on system design and personalization practices.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

- Expected base salary is $246,305–$333,500 per year for the New York, NY location, with possible additional bonus, equity, or incentive compensation.
- Partial telecommuting is permitted from within a commutable distance.
- PayPal’s balanced hybrid model generally includes three days in the office and two days at the office or home workspace.
