Responsibilities
- Define firmware architecture, requirements, subsystem interfaces, dependencies, and design principles for Azure custom silicon programs.
- Provide architectural guidance to silicon design, board design, platform integration, and firmware development teams.
- Translate Azure features, service needs, and platform roadmaps into firmware specifications and technical decisions.
- Drive architecture reviews and technical decisions across boot, platform initialization, manageability, security, telemetry, and recovery flows.
- Develop security requirements and threat models for firmware features, platform capabilities, and cross-domain interfaces.
- Support validation planning by defining expected behavior, feature coverage, acceptance criteria, and release readiness requirements.
- Diagnose architecture and integration issues and perform root cause analysis across silicon, board, and firmware boundaries.
- Influence design tradeoffs and collaborate across teams to improve reliability, performance, security, operational excellence, and maintainability at cloud scale.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and 8+ years of technical engineering experience; alternatively, a master's degree and 6+ years, a doctorate and 3+ years, or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of experience in firmware, embedded systems, or hardware platform architecture is preferred.
- Strong coding experience in C, C++, Rust, or similar low-level firmware and embedded-systems languages.
- Experience defining firmware architecture and requirements for complex hardware platforms and translating product or cloud service needs into firmware specifications.
- Experience with boot firmware, platform initialization, recovery, telemetry, security, manageability, RTOS-based firmware, and pre-silicon environments.
- Experience with silicon and board design teams, hardware/software co-design, custom silicon bring-up, firmware validation, low-level debugging, performance analysis, and root cause analysis.
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages for automation, validation, and tooling.
- Familiarity with PCIe, I3C, I2C, SPI, and USB hardware interfaces and protocols.
- Experience working with Azure service teams and aligning platform firmware with service requirements.
- Ability to influence architecture across engineering teams, communicate with technical and non-technical audiences, and drive technical direction in ambiguous environments.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
Benefits
- The typical U.S. base pay range is USD $142,800–$274,800 per year, with a separate range for specified San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan locations.
- Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
- The position is open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until filled.
