Responsibilities
- Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
- Influence team objectives, technical direction, long-range goals, and product requirements.
- Define standards for backend style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness.
- Mentor associate and intermediate engineers and remove technical blockers through code and design reviews.
- Diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues, participate in incident response, and act as a technical owner.
- Experiment with and integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows and coach others on responsible use.
- Build and maintain GitLab.com’s application-level rate-limiting framework for defining, counting, and observing tenant controls.
Requirements
- Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in complex product or service environments.
- Proficiency in modern backend languages and strong understanding of systems programming, with the ability to learn and adapt across languages.
- Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
- Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, asynchronous written communication, and independent execution.
- Experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production, including loops, tool use, and error-handling strategies.
- Helpful experience includes high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency, profiling, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, schema evolution, partitioning, large-scale modular monoliths, event-driven systems, public technical communication, open source maintenance, or developer-focused SaaS.
