Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Chef cookbooks, recipes, roles, and policy files for automated configuration management across cloud and on-premises environments.
- Build and maintain Chef Automate or equivalent orchestration pipelines for compliance, reporting, and fleet management.
- Engineer reusable automation frameworks, shared libraries, templates, and infrastructure-provisioning patterns.
- Integrate Chef automation with CI/CD pipelines, secrets management, artifact repositories, and enterprise governance controls.
- Implement automated testing and validation for Chef code using Test Kitchen, InSpec, and ChefSpec.
- Collaborate with cloud, platform, and security teams on configuration baselines, compliance policies, and hardened system standards.
- Support Infrastructure as Code implementation using Terraform, CloudFormation, and ARM/Bicep for compute, network, and platform services.
- Troubleshoot complex automation, configuration, and infrastructure issues across hybrid environments.
- Contribute to self-service catalogs, GitOps workflows, automated remediation, and other platform engineering initiatives.
- Document automation patterns, architectural decisions, and operational runbooks.
Requirements
- 5–8+ years of experience in DevOps, platform engineering, infrastructure automation, or configuration management roles.
- Strong hands-on experience with Chef Infra, including cookbook development, policy files, Test Kitchen, and InSpec.
- Experience managing large-scale configuration-management environments such as Chef Server or Chef Automate.
- Solid understanding of Linux systems administration, operating-system hardening, and lifecycle management.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP and on-premises virtualization including VMware or Hyper-V.
- Strong scripting or programming skills, with Ruby preferred for Chef and experience with Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.
- Strong understanding of Git workflows, branching strategies, and code review practices.
- Preferred experience with Chef Habitat, Chef Automate, Terraform, policy-as-code tools such as OPA, Conftest, or Sentinel, security hardening, compliance frameworks, or CIS benchmarks.
- Preferred exposure to Kubernetes, Helm, monitoring and observability platforms such as Prometheus, Datadog, Splunk, or ELK, network automation, or infrastructure APIs.
