Responsibilities
- Build and maintain custom software and automation for operating MySQL at Shopify’s scale.
- Operate the database fleet through virtual machine management, MySQL configuration and performance tuning, capacity planning, and resiliency testing.
- Own connection management, backup, and failover software supporting Shopify’s database platform.
- Plan and execute changes to critical systems with a focus on correctness and risk reduction.
- Participate in a shared on-call rotation for Shopify’s database platform.
Requirements
- Demonstrated infrastructure and large-scale distributed systems experience with real production ownership.
- Strong software engineering ability and experience writing and maintaining production code.
- Hands-on operational experience with stateful systems, including configuration and performance tuning, capacity planning, failure testing, and incident response.
- Exceptional attention to detail and experience de-risking changes to critical systems.
- Comfort carrying a pager and exercising judgment during critical infrastructure incidents.
- Effective use of AI tooling to accelerate work and address gaps.
- Bonus: deep MySQL experience, including internals, replication, backup and restore, proxying, and routing.
- Bonus: experience with ZooKeeper or similar distributed systems.
- Bonus: experience with Google Cloud Platform.
- Bonus: experience operating a large database fleet at a comparable company scale.
