Responsibilities
- Design and build production AI systems powering Sequencing AI.
- Develop distributed backend services, genomic reasoning engines, and retrieval systems combining bioinformatics with modern AI.
- Serve as the bioinformatics expert on the AI Team and shape genomic knowledge representation, retrieval, reasoning, and validation.
- Build scalable services that reason over genes, variants, diseases, medications, and scientific literature.
- Design data models, indexing strategies, and storage architectures across PostgreSQL, Qdrant, Redis, DuckDB, and Apache Spark.
- Develop guardrails and deterministic reasoning layers to keep AI responses scientifically accurate, explainable, and grounded in genomic evidence.
- Translate complex bioinformatics and genomic knowledge into scalable production software.
- Collaborate with backend and bioinformatics engineers to architect reliable, high-performance AI systems.
- Continuously improve the platform’s scientific accuracy, performance, and capabilities.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience designing, building, and operating production backend systems at scale.
- Expert-level TypeScript experience with ownership of production services end to end.
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals and experience designing and scaling such systems.
- Hands-on experience building large-scale data processing systems and processing very large datasets.
- Deep experience designing high-performance data architectures using PostgreSQL, DuckDB, Redis, and similar technologies.
- Experience building distributed, event-driven systems using AWS SQS, RabbitMQ, BullMQ, or similar technologies.
- Experience building production AI systems involving retrieval architectures, vector databases, LLM APIs, and AI evaluation.
- Deep expertise in human whole-genome sequencing and genomic interpretation.
- Extensive experience with VCFs, genomic annotations, and variant interpretation.
- Strong knowledge of ClinVar, dbSNP, gnomAD, HGVS nomenclature, transcript databases, and other core genomic resources.
- Experience building production software applying bioinformatics and genomic knowledge to clinical or consumer genomics applications.
- Ability to combine senior-level production software engineering with deep human bioinformatics expertise.
