Responsibilities
- Lead the technical direction of Instacart’s Bazel build system, including remote caching, remote build execution, build performance, and developer ergonomics.
- Lead the technical direction of the Go platform, frameworks, standard libraries, service scaffolding, and engineering patterns.
- Design and drive multi-quarter initiatives that improve build times, CI reliability, and local development workflows.
- Own and instrument developer experience metrics, using data to prioritize investment.
- Partner with infrastructure, platform, and product engineering teams to roll out build-system and Go-platform changes.
- Set technical standards for reliability, performance, upgrade cadence, and developer ergonomics.
- Mentor engineers and grow the organization’s Bazel and Go expertise.
- Represent the team in cross-organization technical discussions about build, CI/CD, and backend platform direction.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software development experience.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Bazel, including remote caching, remote build execution, and performance tuning of large build graphs.
- Strong production experience writing and operating Go services at scale, including structuring large Go codebases with frameworks, dependency management, testing patterns, and shared libraries.
- Experience leading cross-team technical initiatives with measurable impact on developer velocity, build performance, or CI reliability.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, with AWS preferred, and distributed systems.
- Strong technical leadership, mentoring, and ability to influence without direct authority.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience migrating a large codebase or monorepo to Bazel or evolving an existing Bazel setup through major upgrades preferred.
- Experience owning or contributing to a Go framework, standard library, or service scaffolding used by a large engineering organization preferred.
- Experience defining and instrumenting developer productivity metrics preferred.
- Experience operating developer infrastructure for large engineering organizations at high-growth companies preferred.
