Responsibilities
- Determine which engine functionality is needed for the product and remove, rewrite, or optimize unnecessary functionality.
- Profile and optimize CPU, GPU, memory, loading time, binary size, frame rate, and battery or power usage.
- Modify underlying engine and runtime technology for mobile and constrained hardware requirements.
- Improve memory allocators, memory footprint, asset streaming, lazy and asynchronous loading, texture compression, and rendering.
- Optimize draw calls, GPU pipelines, shaders, CPU/GPU synchronization, multithreading, and frame pacing.
- Work with iOS and Android graphics APIs and debug device-specific problems across hardware generations.
- Make architecture and systems design decisions for lower-powered hardware constraints.
- Experiment with and adopt AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering workflows.
Requirements
- Strong professional C++ experience.
- 7+ years of game engine or runtime experience, including work below the gameplay or application layer.
- Shipping experience on iOS and/or Android.
- Experience with constrained hardware and a strong understanding of mobile hardware limitations.
- Experience profiling and optimizing CPU, GPU, memory, loading, asset footprint, binary size, and frame rate.
- Experience modifying underlying engine or runtime technology rather than only building features on top of an engine.
- Experience debugging device-specific problems across different hardware generations.
- Strong architecture and systems design skills.
- Candidates from Unity or Unreal backgrounds must demonstrate work below engine abstractions, such as native C/C++ work, IL2CPP, native plugins, or modified engine source.
- Preferred: experience stripping down, customizing, or optimizing an engine or runtime for target mobile hardware.
- Preferred: Godot core contribution, C++ engine development, or mobile and platform contributions.
- Preferred: experience on a proprietary mobile engine team involving memory, rendering, asset systems, platform abstraction, or threading.
- Preferred: experience modifying Unreal Engine source.
- Preferred: battery or power optimization, low-end device optimization, and hands-on experimentation with AI-assisted development tools.
