Responsibilities
- Define and evolve API architecture, standards, governance, review processes, and lifecycle policies across Product Engineering.
- Partner with product and engineering teams on domain modeling, service boundaries, object models, API endpoints, backend services, and integration flows.
- Establish standards for OpenAPI contracts, resource modeling, authentication and authorization, multi-tenancy, error handling, retries, idempotency, versioning, and deprecation.
- Develop reference architectures for agent-ready APIs, orchestration, data-centric APIs, observability, latency, and enterprise integrations.
- Lead cross-team API design reviews and resolve high-impact architectural decisions.
- Partner with API champions and platform teams to shape roadmaps, identify gaps, converge on shared patterns, and prioritize investments.
- Evaluate tools for API design, testing, catalogs, connectors, and developer tooling.
- Mentor senior engineers and managers, communicate API strategy to senior stakeholders, and build communities of practice.
Requirements
- 12+ years of experience building large-scale, mission-critical backend systems and APIs with cross-team or organization-wide API or platform architecture responsibility.
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with hands-on object-oriented modeling and software design experience.
- 5+ years designing scalable, secure, and consistent API endpoints that expose product functionality and setting technical standards across multiple teams.
- Hands-on experience using Java, TypeScript, or Python to build web services and APIs across REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, and Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Strong expertise in distributed systems, cloud architectures, high-throughput and low-latency services, horizontal scaling, and fault-tolerant design.
- Experience with edge and gateway patterns, API governance, observability, SLOs, data platforms, analytical stores, and safe data exposure.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot and familiarity with agentic AI integrations involving LLMs and enterprise APIs.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong collaboration, communication, stakeholder influence, mentoring, and organization-wide technical leadership skills.
