Principal Software Engineer, Data Platform
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Build and scale data platform infrastructure, including streaming systems, lakehouse capabilities, feature serving, and internal developer-facing APIs.
- Work hands-on with Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, and streaming infrastructure to diagnose performance issues and make architectural decisions at scale.
- Contribute to technical strategy and translate complex data platform problems into clear direction and executable plans.
- Design platform API surfaces that enable engineering teams across Toast to self-service with an emphasis on adoption and ease of use.
- Influence adjacent teams and align engineering, product, and leadership stakeholders on architectural decisions.
- Mentor engineers and raise engineering practices across the organization.
- Use AI tooling to improve day-to-day engineering effectiveness and help the team adopt it.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of software engineering experience with meaningful experience in data platforms or distributed systems.
- Deep expertise in Apache Spark and Apache Iceberg.
- Strong streaming infrastructure experience with Apache Kafka, Apache Pulsar, or similar technologies.
- Experience with cloud-native data platforms on AWS.
- Experience designing internal platforms and developer-facing abstractions.
- Ability to drive technical alignment across multi-team environments and communicate architectural changes effectively.
- Databricks experience is preferred or beneficial.
