Responsibilities
- Baseline the multi-cluster Amazon EKS estate, including inventory, topology, workload placement, ownership, cost, and Kubernetes support status.
- Analyze failure domains and dependency concentration, then design a multi-cluster target architecture with workload placement and tenancy models.
- Design and implement automated EKS upgrades, including cluster strategies, Karpenter node rotation, add-on compatibility, and API deprecation management.
- Lead compute sizing, capacity planning, workload-fit analysis, headroom planning, and a phased ARM64/Graviton migration.
- Configure Karpenter NodePools, weighting, overlays, disruption policies, consolidation, and safe Spot capacity patterns.
- Model compute, support, and commitment economics and quantify savings opportunities.
- Assess ingress, Gateway API, service mesh, CNI, GitOps, and infrastructure-as-code posture.
- Measure maintenance toil, define reduction targets, and build automation to reduce platform operations burden.
- Lead the embedded TechPod as a player-coach and serve as the primary technical contact for customer infrastructure leadership.
- Define an AI-assisted DevOps agent workstream, produce technical and executive documentation, and present recommendations to engineering leadership.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, platform, or infrastructure engineering, including 4+ years operating production Kubernetes and prior technical lead, staff, or principal-level experience.
- Deep production experience with Amazon EKS at large scale, including multiple production clusters, thousands of nodes, or tens of thousands of pods.
- Hands-on ownership of EKS version upgrades, API deprecations, add-on compatibility, node rotation, rollback planning, and EKS support lifecycles.
- Advanced production experience with Karpenter, including NodePools, disruption, consolidation, weighting, and flexible instance selection.
- Strong knowledge of EC2 instance families, CPU architectures, networking limits, workload bottlenecks, and capacity planning.
- Experience migrating production workloads to Graviton or other ARM64 platforms, including multi-architecture container builds and performance validation.
- Experience modeling cloud compute costs and commitments using Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and Spot capacity.
- Solid knowledge of AWS VPC CNI, ingress controllers, Gateway API, service mesh, and load balancing on EKS.
- Advanced Terraform proficiency and experience with Helm and GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux.
- Experience with Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or comparable observability tooling.
- Strong scripting ability with Python, Go, or Bash.
- Ability to assess unfamiliar environments quickly and translate technical findings into cost, risk, and capacity recommendations for executives.
- Preferred qualifications include consumer-scale or safety-critical platform experience, multi-cluster architecture, price-performance benchmarking, Spot at scale, JVM tuning, Bottlerocket, AI-assisted infrastructure operations, consulting discovery engagements, and advanced certifications such as CKA, CKS, or professional AWS certifications.
