Responsibilities
- Incrementally decompose monolithic systems into well-bounded services using patterns such as strangler fig.
- Manage coexistence between legacy and modern systems during migration.
- Design service boundaries, contracts, and data ownership models while maintaining backward compatibility.
- Improve system performance, scalability, maintainability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Build, test, deploy, and operate backend systems and cloud-native services.
- Use observability tools to validate system behavior and troubleshoot production issues.
- Participate in incident response, production issue resolution, and a 24/7 on-call rotation.
- Evaluate AI-generated solutions and use AI tools to analyze legacy systems and accelerate refactoring.
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience owning production systems and operational improvements.
- Hands-on experience modernizing monolithic systems in production and using migration patterns such as strangler fig, parallel runs, or phased rollouts.
- Strong backend development experience with Ruby, Node.js, or similar technologies.
- Understanding of distributed systems, service contracts, APIs, and common software design patterns.
- Experience with legacy systems, system decomposition, backward compatibility, API and data contracts, and debugging across legacy and extracted services.
- Experience with automated unit, integration, and API testing.
- Experience building and operating cloud-native services in AWS.
- Experience using observability tools such as Datadog or equivalent.
- Familiarity with modern deployment workflows, incident response, and continuous reliability improvements.
- Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation.
- Experience with or strong interest in AI-assisted development tools and the ability to evaluate AI-generated solutions.
